2023 Wood Diamond Award Kitchen Frameless $25-50K Colorado Cabinet Makers First Place
Colorado Cabinet Makers is a small custom cabinet shop located in Loveland, Colorado. James & Tracey, the owners, handle the business and design while 10 talented and dedicated woodworkers make sawdust in the shop. We do most of our own installs to keep quality control of the projects. Very little is outsourced while creating a wide variety of quality residential cabinetry and millwork. James has been a member of the Cabinet Makers Association for many years.

This kitchen Project was built for Cheryl and Ray in Loveland, Colorado. They were having their dream home built by a local contractor on a lot west of Loveland with beautiful views facing the front range of the Rocky Mountains. The home is new construction, and we were able to work with the clients planning the features and feel of the kitchen as the project came out of the ground. They wanted a modern rustic feel with all the features a new kitchen should have. A eat in island with seating to entertain 6 was at the top of the list. To bring the Colorado feel into the design we wanted to include a hand pealed character log holding up one end of the island. A standing dead pine tree was found a few miles away that had a section of character that was super interesting. Many hours of bark removal and sanding revealed a truly unique pedestal for the island. To complete the structural requirements to hold up the leathered granite slab, a tube steel frame was cut and welded up in the back corner of the shop (don’t tell the fire department!!). The log pedestal is highlighted with LED lighting recessed under the counter to help make it a focal point. The wood species for the cabinets was Rustic Knotty Alder. Each piece of every door and panel was individually wire brushed to give it a aged, weathered feel and look. A quirk was routered into each joint to make the transition between grain directions look clean. Between the wire brushing and the quirks, the stained and glazed finish really had a warm look. Inside and outside L corner floating shelves with recessed LED puck lights worked out well in the design. A beverage center at the living room end of the kitchen included lots of wine bottle storage, a lit glass display cabinet and a wood panel front ice maker. The corner Lazy Susan includes full round, independently rotating 32” susans with auto on LED interior lighting. The functional hardware was all Blum Soft Close. All in all, Cheryl and Ray got a updated, modern take on a rustic Colorado kitchen!
